Things you shouldn’t do in Facebook

Good guidelines for how to use Facebook “properly.”

Using ‘Facebook mail’ and ‘strangers adding people’ are my two biggest Facebook pet peeves.

Fast food and senior citizens

Sitting in Orlando International Airport, waiting for my flight to Washington DC and the impending 10 year university reunion.  How exciting!  Scenes from Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion and Grosse Point Blank are flashing through my mind.

It was a pleasant few days in Florida.  I find that I sleep much better in my Florida home than I do in Singapore.  Deep, deep sleep that is punctuated by frequent vivid dreams.  In a way I feel like my brain is more alive and generating its own stimulating thoughts when I am home in Florida than when I am in Singapore… where I’m usually so tired that I’m just dealing with whatever external stimuli is making its way from my nerve endings into my head.

I wonder if it’s a lifestyle change that I need to do in Singapore or if it’s something more physical – like just getting a new bed or making sure I put my earplugs in at night (I’m a very light sleeper).

Anyway, I learned something about myself when I was in Florida.  The learning?  I get frustrated when taking senior citizens to fast food places.  I took my uncle and aunt (both 70+ years old) to Checkers Burgers and Backyard Burger.  Watching them go over the menu was an exercise in patience – more than 10 minutes were needed for them to parse through the various combos offered and what ingredients were in each burger.  Note – they have eaten at Burger King and Mcdonalds numerous times so it’s not like they are new to the concept of fast food and packaging a burger, fries, and a soda all together.  It was as if they felt that if they made the wrong order, the world would end.

Aside from my fast food flip-out, I really enjoyed my time in Florida.

Windows Live Messenger Beta

Check out the beta of Windows Live Messenger.  Lots of cool new features including using video as your display picture and “Tiled Moods” – where your display picture will change based on the emoticon you use (i.e. if you type an angry emoticon, your display picture will change to something angry).

List of all the new features

There are also new sections for Favorite contacts and Groups.

Xbox Avatars

Xbox 360 is adding a new feature that looks very similar to the Nintendo Wii’s Mii feature.

This video shows the creation and customization for avatars:

Florida, DC, NY, Lisbon

In a couple hours I leave on a trip that will take me to the sunny suburbs of Florida, my 10 year university reunion in Washington DC, the urban paradise of New York City, and the old world charms of Lisbon, Portugal.

It’s a good time to be leaving Singapore.  Traveling solo for a solid chunk of time is like hitting the reset button on life.  Leave all the concerns and worries of the day-to-day behind…

30 hours from now when I step off the plane and into Orlando, I’m sure my brain will be frazzled, I will have watched 8 movies, and Singapore will be a far-away place.

I’m a PC

The next part of Microsoft’s campaign has started.

See a series of the ads here.

One of my favorite songs.

The video is of Erlend Øye from Kings of Convenience doing a cover of it.  Originally by Big Star and also covered wonderfully by Wilco.

CNN Fact Checks McCain

I wonder if Tucker Bounds believes everything he says.

Palin and Troopergate

Well, Sarah Palin has decided to stop cooperating with the Troopergate investigation.  According to the McCain campaign, the investigation has been “hijacked by Democrats.”

Random observation: I was watching Varsity Blues last night on cable tv and couldn’t help but notice that Sarah Palin has a strong resemblance to “Miss Davis.”  Miss Davis, played by Tonie Perensky, is a high school teacher by day, stripper by night.

Saturday Night Live – Palin & Clinton

Saturday Night Live’s 34th season kicked off this past weekend.  Opening skit?  Tiny Fey as Sarah Palin and Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton.  Tina and Amy also paired up in the very funny movie Baby Mama.

The more I read about Sarah Palin, the more I feel she is unfit to even be under consideration for Vice-President of the United States of America.

NY Times: Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes

MSNBC: Palin cut own duties as mayor of Wasilla

Amusing – even Karl Rove thinks the McCain ads have gone too far in their attacks and distortions against Obama.

From the Obama campaign:

“In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove – the man who held the previous record – said McCain’s ads have gone too far,” said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Hopefully the Obama campaign realizes that a large swath of the McCain / Palin supporters ultimately don’t seem to care that the McCaign campaign is running “the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history.”  So calling them sleazy is pointless.  Adjust strategy!
